BUSINESSES ALONG 118 AVENUE FROM EARLY TIMES TO NOW!

Having almost finished the businesses along 112 Avenue a start is need to be made on 118 Avenue. It was decided not to include the north side of the avenue at this point. There is no 'village' atmosphere here, the stores are, for the most part, old. However they are part of the Highlands-Bellevue history.
I am again, grateful for the use of Henderson's Directories at Edmonton Archives and on line through the U of A. These books, although useful, are not always 100% accurate, and not all years are available: the best has been done with the material on hand. As always staff at the Archives have been friendly and helpful.

Store owner and pharmacists Laurie Reay and her competent staff have served this neighbourhood at this location since 1993. Pride is taken to to know their patients; this being an important part of our health care team.

Laurie and her husband Trevor lived nearby to the pharmacy and when it opened as one of the first Medicine Shoppes in Canada they decided to become business owners, as they loved the professional focus of the pharmacy.

Exceptional customer service and pharmaceutical care is provided. Although we are a small, locally owned pharmacy they provide many services besides filling prescriptions; immunizations, injections, travel medicine are but a few of the services rendered. Prescribing pharmacist are also readily available.

You are invited to take advantage of this very important part of the Highlands/Beverly community.

Hours of business: Monday - Friday 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 10 am-5pm.

The Money Outlet displays no signs offering  two for one ... or free samples! One however, is struck by the clean, open styling of the  establishment...and the friendliness of the President and proprietor Michael Lee and his partner Sharon Fredeen. And this was before Sharon knew what I was after!

The brevity of this article does not allow room to cover all the research undertaken by Michael before opening this 'specialty' business. Needless to say though, much was done to ensure only the most ethical service that could be provided, would be. It was then and only then, that the venture began on this location in November 2004.

Low interest cash advances, mail box rentals, Western Union services, phone recon-nections, cell phone airtime and long distance calling cards are a few of the superior services offered.

The operation is already known for a friendly, discrete atmosphere, and a iIIingness to go the extra mile, Money Outlet is happy to provide its services in a lively and vibrant com-munity. Money Outlet treats all customers with respect and iscretion. A highlight of the services offered is its flexible approval policy.

Oh, yes ... there is no money held on the premises

Rental signs torn down, people working inside, led to the discovery of the operator of the new barber shop at 5019-118 Avenue. I met Hassan [Sam} busily working on the renovations of his business. I left the usual business form and next day I receive a call telling me the form was ready. A good start!

Sam thought I was the plumber when I arrived at the store in response to his call… after a few minutes thought, he remembered me and we were in business… at least Sam is… he is the proprietor of the new EAST SIDE BARBER SHOP.

A quick look around showed, that when finished, the shop will be bright and professional. We talked prices briefly… my own tonsorial artist will have to lower his price to compete… Ahmed, can you hear?

Sam says he is an enthusiast when it comes to his business of barbering and the barbering business in general. He has been so engaged for 11 years. He claims he can really make you look fresh in 5 minutes!

The Highland-Beverly area was selected by Sam as he saw potential for a good business. He hopes his business will benefit the area, and, of course, the community will benefit him!

Providing everyone with great attentive service, fair prices, bearing in mind the economy, Sam will reach his goal of having happy customers!

The photo showing Sam in his construction attire also shows some of the shop.

Welcome, Sam, to our community!
